Kalpetta and its nearby towns are known to have beautiful waterfalls, lakes and hillocks. Wayanad’s capital city used to be a trading town, especially serving as a market town for hill produces. At one time, Kalpetta used to be a Jain centre. The famous Ananthanathaswami Jain temple is situated at Puliyarmala near this city. There are Jain temples that stand even today.

Kalpetta region’s history goes back to more than three thousand years ago when it was inhabited by the early man. Historians believe that the area was inhabited by people, at least ten centuries before Christ. Innumerable evidences have been found about the existence of New Stone Age civilization on the hills of Wayanad. The caves located on the hilly areas have pictures on their walls and pictorial writings that indicate a lot about the past and its civilization. The Wayanad area was historically ruled by the Rajas of the Veda tribe. It was later ruled by the Pazhassi Raja of Kottayam-Kurumbanad Royal Dynasty of Kannur.

Taxi : Taxis and private vehicles are one of the most common means of travel to Wayanad. The most popular route is Bangalore – Mysore – Gundulpet – Munthanga – Sulthan Battery. The roads are in excellent condition.
BUS : Buses to the town of Kalpetta will be available from the nearby cities of Kozhikode and Vythiri, and even from other cities and towns like Bangalore, Mysore and Mangalore. You can opt for either air conditioned buses or non air conditioned buses, and bus fares will vary depending on the same. Bus fares from Kozhikode will range around Rs 50 to 100 due to the proximity of the place (100 km).
Train : Trains are the best option if you’re not accustomed to travelling long distances through buses. Trains can be taken to Kozhikode, and buses from Kozhikode to Kalpetta can be taken. There are regular trains from Kozhikode to Madgaon, Chennai, Pune and Goa. You will also get regular trains to New Delhi and Mumbai. Train fares will range from Rs 200 for local destinations to Rs 600 for destinations in another state.
Air : The Nearest airport is the one in Kozhikode, which has local flights to Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai. Flight fares will range around Rs 4000.
