Reflecting a cosmopolitan mix of inhabitants, Jeddah has been an important port and trading city for centuries. This second largest city of the country has is the principal gateway to Mecca and Medina, the holiest cities of Islam. One of the most diverse and tolerant cities of Saudi Arabia, Jeddah today is a major commercial center in the kingdom which is renowned for its bunch of hotels, resorts, beaches, cafes, restaurants and shopping districts.
Without any rivers or valleys, the eastern sections of Jeddah comprise of the Al-Sarawat Mountains. Sprawled along the Red Sea coastline, Jeddah is mostly arid and hot in summer, but cold in the winter. Recognized as the fourth largest industrial city, Jeddah has historically been a trading hub exporting 19th century goods like tortoise shells, mother-of-pearls, frankincense and various other spices.
