Detail InformationEdit

A very small mountain located 400 kilometers to the north of Khartoum, Jebel Barkal, along with the historical city of Napata were recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003. Situated by the side of a large bend on River Nile, Jebel Barkal displays historic ruins of at least 13 temples and 3 palaces which were originally discovered by European explorers in 1820s. Some of these larger temples which are considered sacred by the locals even today belong to the independent kingdom of Kush around 1750 BCE.
Serving as a royal cemetery during the Meroitic Kingdom, there are several pyramids of tourist interest at Jebel Barkal dating back to the 3rd century BC. Later the 25th dynasty Nubian King Piye enlarged the New Kingdom Temple of Amun at Napata and erected his Year 20 Victory Stela within it. Historically used as a landmark by the traders, where it was easier to cross the great river, Jebel Barkal Mountain is located along the old important trade-route between Central Africa, Arabia and Egypt.
