Detail InformationEdit
The Japanese yankee repository of San Jose (JAMsj) is found at 535 N. Fifth Street in San Jose, within the heart of Japantown. The museum’s mission is to gather, preserve, and share Japanese yankee art, history, and culture with a stress on the larger urban center Bay space.
The JAMsj was established in Gregorian calendar month 1987. It grew out of a 1984-86 research on Japanese yankee farmers within the Santa Clara natural depression. The farming project collected family histories, historical images, non-public memoirs and alternative unpublished documents and junction rectifier to the event of a programme package on Japanese yankee history, that was adopted to be used by the San Jose Unified and side Union highschool Districts. JAMsj’s workshop on developing family histories provided documentary materials and photos enclosed within the victory book Japanese Legacy: Farming and Community Life in California’s Santa Clara natural depression (1985) co-authored by Timothy J. Lukes, Ph.D. And Gary Y. Okihiro, Ph.D.
The repository started within the historic Issei Memorial Building (formerly the Kuwabara Hospital) with the assistance and support of the japanese americans League, San Jose Chapter. In 2002, the name modified from Japanese yankee Resource Center/Museum (JARC/M) to Japanese yankee repository of San Jose (JAMsj) to higher replicate the museum’s deposit focus. JAMsj currently occupies the previous residence of Yedo Ishikawa, M.D. 2 doors south on North Fifth Street.
