The Iglesia de Santo Domingo or the Church of Santo Domingo , or Santo Domingo Convent Church is a religious place of Roman Catholic worship under the patronage of St. Dominic in the city of Santiago de Chile , the state capital of Chile. This church was built by architect Juan de los Santos Vasconcellos, and its construction began in 1747. Approximately, starting in 1795 , the architect Joaquín Toesca was responsible for the works. It hosted the first Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas, in 1622, whose first president was Fray Martin de Salvatierra OP. It was declared a National Historic Landmark by Decree No. 5058 of 6 July 1951 .
This church is built in neoclassical Doric style of architecture, with some characteristic features of the Bavarian baroque as brick towers which were provided by Toesca, and in decorating Americanism in archivolts . It is the most dominant structure in the convent of the order of the Dominicans , whose three cloisters occupies much of the block. The Convent is the home of the friars, which also is based on the Vicariate Studentate which takes a Diploma in Theology.
The temple also houses the Shrine of Nuestra Señora del Rosario (Our Lady of Pompeii) and the Youth and Family Ministry downtown of the city. Housed Works inside include interesting artworks and sculpture, among which is the Virgin of the Rosary of Pompeii, which is worshiped every Thursday with rosaries and Masses throughout the day; niche statues include St. Pius V , St. Catherine of Siena , St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Rose of Lima .
