Horlivka is a city in the Donetsk Oblast (province) of eastern Ukraine. As of 2001, the city’s population was 292,000. It is a coal mining and chemical industry centre. Gorlovka State Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages has a two building campus in the center of town. The settlement was founded by Pyotr Gorlov in 1867, though it was little more than a series of mining camps until its rapid expansion in the 1930s.
During the Russian Revolution of 1905, it was the scene of an armed uprising. In recent years many mines have closed, and the city’s population fell by more than ten percent during the 1990s.
