Hollókő is the most beautiful pearl in the diadem of the gently rolling Cserhát Hills. This gem of Palócland, a tiny village in Central Europe which is kept in the most authentic original form, and represents the style of the traditional folk architecture, has been registered as a World heritage site for twenty years.
In the centre of the village with 58 protected buildings you can see masterpieces of the 17th century folk architecture. After a great fire in 1909 the buildings of the village were rebuilt in their present form. Some written documents of the church even date back as far as 1343, but the mediaeval church building was destroyed during the Turkish occupation. This present Roman Catholic Church building of adobe walls and with a wooden tower, on stone foundations, is the characteristic sight of the village. The most precious treasures in it are a carved statue of piety from Upper Hungary, a flag from the 17th century, and a cross with Jesus’ body – a present from the Esztergom Museum of Christianity.
Another symbol of Hollókő is the castle overlooking the village. With its strong walls, tower and Many valiant defenders it protected the surroundings from the Turkish and Austrian troops for several centuries. It has been left for the future generations as the most complete fortification from the 13th century in Nógrád County. Archaeologists and experts of monument protection have been working to restore the fortress since the 1960s.
