Situated at a distance of 40 km southeast of Leh, in Jammu & Kashmir is the town of Hemis, well known for Hemis Gompa, established in 1672 AD by King Senge Nampar Gyalva. The region of Hemis is also popular for the existence of a national park, known as the Hemis High Altitude National Park, which is famous for its snow leopard. The park is also home to many species of animals like wolves, marmots, red foxes, ibexes, macaques, langurs, urials and deers. Hemis is also best known to tourists for its colorful festival held in July. It is a great place to get a glimpse of untouched natural beauty and to go trekking through the unexplored realms. Hemis experiences temperate climate with its basic seasons of summer and winter. The region doesn’t receive enough rainfall as it lies in the rain shadow region in the state, and showers are rare as well as sparse.

Hemis Monastery is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery (gompa) of the Drukpa Lineage, located in Hemis, Ladakh (within the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. The highest settlements of the world. Hemis gompa is believed to have been established in 1630 by Lama Tagstang Raspa and built by Palden Sara under the patronage of King Sengge Namgyal on a site previously sanctified by the construction of a cave hermitage dating from the 12th century.

By Air : Flights can be taken to the airport in Leh, which has frequent flights to Delhi, Srinagar and Pune. Domestic flight fares will range around Rs 4,000 to Rs 6,000.
By Train : There are no train connectivity to Hemis and tourists can take trains only up to Delhi. From there the onward journey has to be undertaken on buses or taxis.
By Bus : Buses are the locally preferred mode of transport. You can opt for buses to Hemis Gompa from the region of Leh, as regular buses will be available. The town of Hemis is located at a distance of forty five kilometres from the Leh, and bus fares will be very cheap, at around Rs 30 to 50. Government run buses will mainly be available, and this is one option you can take.
