Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah (Nizamuddin’s Shrine),(Urdu: نظام الدّین درگاہ , Hindi: निज़ामुद्दीन दरगाह) is the dargah (mausoleum) of one of the world’s most famous Sufi saints, Nizamuddin Auliya (1238 – 1325 CE). Situated in the Nizamuddin West area of Delhi, the Dargah is visited by thousands of Muslims every week, and sees a fair share of Hindus, Christians and people from other religions. The tombs of poet Amir Khusro and Mughal princess Jehan Ara Begum are also located within the Nizamuddin Dargah complex, and Inayat Khan’s tomb is just around the corner.

Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah (Nizamuddin’s Shrine) is situated in the historic Nizamuddin village is the shrine of a famous humanitarian Muslim Sufi and mystic saint, Sheikh Hazrat Nizamuddin Aulia Chishti. Born at Badaun in Uttar Pradesh in 1236 AD, he was the disciple of saint Sheikh Farid Shakarganj, who appointed him as his successor. Mughal Emperors like Babur, Humayun, Akbar, Jahangir, and Shah Jahan paid their reverence at the sacred Dargah, halting their procession. People of all faiths venerated the saint, who was popular because of his doctrine of renunciation and tolerance towards other religions. Hazrat Nizamuddin died in 1325 and his shrine today is a renowned pilgrimage site. The original tomb of Hazrat Nizamuddin no longer exists. The present structure was constructed by a nobleman named Faridun Khan in the mid-15th century. It was renovated and decorated by Firoz Shah Tughlaq, as well as by later rulers. It has a marble-paved courtyard where the sacred shrine of the saint can be seen. Shah Jahan later added the majestic pavilion with its marble arches and lattice screens known as jalis. Worshippers tie red threads to these jalis as signs of wishes they hope will be fulfilled. The roof, presumably constructed by Akbar II, is crested by a dome decked by vertical black stripes. The main grave is wrapped with a scented dark green coloured cloth.The revered saint was popular among people of all faiths because of his doctrine of renunciation and tolerance towards other religions. It is said that he prophesied Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq would never return to Delhi again and the ruler died soon after. Hazrat Nizamuddin died in 1325 and his shrine today is a popular pilgrimage site.Hazrat Nizamuddin’s original tomb no longer exists. Faridun Khan, a nobleman, built the present structure in the mid-15th century, and it was repaired and decorated by Firoz Shah Tughlaq, as well as by later rulers. A mosque and many other tombs of famous people surround the Dargah, as they wished to be buried near the saint.

Bus : Tourists can either take local buses from various points within the city to reach this sight, which is located in North Delhi.
Train : For foreigners, it’s easiest to make ticket bookings at the helpful International Tourist Bureau 23405156; 1st floor, New Delhi train station; 8am-8pm Mon-Sat, to 2pm Sun). Do not believe anyone – including porters – who tells you it has shifted,closed or burnt down and don’t let anyone stop you from going to the 1st floor of the main building for bookings. When making reservations here, if you are paying in rupees you may have to provide back-up money exchange certificates (or ATM receipts), so take these with you just in case.

Others : METRO The new high-speed metro line is the best way to get to/from the airport, and runs between New Delhi train station and Dwarka Sector 21, via Shivaji Stadium, Dhaula Kuan NH8 (Mahipalpur station) and Indira Gandhi International station (Terminal 3). Trains operate every 10 minutes from 5am to 1am. Cycle-rickshaws are still in use in parts of Old Delhi, though they have been banned in Chandni Chowk to reduce congestion. Let’s hope they’re not banned in other areas, as they’re the best way to get around Old Delhi – the drivers are wizards at weaving through the crowds. Tips are appreciated for this gruelling work.
