Gwolu is a town in northern Ghana built in the late 19th century by people fleeing the activities of the slave raider Babatu Zato. Hilla Limann, a former Ghanaian President was born here. The name of the village itself commemorates one Gwollu (or Gbollu) Koro Limann, who had a double circular wall built round the local community in the 19th century as a defence against Babatu’s raids. A preserved section of the mud wall can still be seen.
