Grumblethorpe, in Germantown, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was the house of the Owen Wister family. It had been engineered as a summer residence in 1744 by Philadelphia businessperson and wine bourgeois John Owen Wister. It eventually became the family’s year-around residence once they withdrew from town throughout the black vomit Epidemic of 1793. The stones for the house were quarried on the property and therefore the joists were hewn from oaks in Owen Wister Woods, conjointly in hand by the family. With its sturdy stone and oak facade, Grumblethorpe was called “John Wister’s massive House.” within the early nineteenth century, Charles Jones Owen Wister gave the house its name, from the favored amusing novel Thinks-I-To-Myself by Edward Nares.
In September 1777, the house was the scene of events within the Battle of Germantown. Whereas the Wisters were staying in another home, British General James Agnew occupied the house as his headquarters throughout the battle. He was wounded and died within the front parlor, wherever his blood stains will still be seen on the ground.
The Owen Wister family lived within the house for over one hundred sixty years. Writer Sally Owen Wister (John’s granddaughter) lived here from 1789 till her death in 1804. The house, that has been repaired and refurnished to match the first amount, currently is a depository. The historic gardens also are being repaired. Grumblethorpe was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. It’s a tributary property of the Colonial Germantown Historic District, that has been selected a National Historic Landmark.
