Grantsville, 1/2 mile west of the Casselman stream, began as alittle Mennonite and Mennonite settlement, known as Tomlinson’s or very little Crossing, on Braddock rd., that wound westward from Cumberland over Negro Mountain. Later a brand new village flourished as a stop on the near National Road, Route 40. From 1818, the national road carried many thousands of pioneers and settlers in stagecoaches and coated wagons. Within the 1800s, a part simply outside Grantsville (once referred to as very little Crossing however currently marked by the tiny Crossing Antique Store & Gift Shoppe Associate in Nursingd an frozen dessert parlor, The Dip) was a significant stop on the recent national pike. There’s a “dip” within the road that travelers won’t miss once they withstand very little Crossing on Route forty.
