Government Museum & Art Gallery came into existence in the year 1968. It is a very famous tourist attraction place that houses magnificent Gandhara period stone sculptures. This museum is open except for Monday on all other days. The credit for the wonderful designing of this museum goes to Le Corbusier. Chandigarh Government Museum and Art Gallery is a perfect place for viewing the prehistoric fossils and artifacts. You can also find beautiful miniature paintings over here. The museum also has a spacious reference library to meet the intellectual needs of scholars and students. It houses a number of art galleries, which can be broadly classified as Gandhara and Hindu Sculptures, Miniature Paintings, Decorative Arts and Coins & contemporary art gallery.

HistoryEdit

Government Museum & Art Gallery in Chandigarh signify its existence during the partition of India. The artifacts being the objects, paintings, sculpture and decorative arts were initially kept in the then capital of Punjab, Lahore. The division that took place made the objects be divided, the 60% of which were retained as these were those objects that have been already mentioned in books and extracted from the sites that came in Punjab region. The remaining 40% that mainly constituted the sculptures of Gandhara and small paintings, tend to be in the share of East Punjab. The collection so received in 1949 was first bought to Amritsar and then later was moved to Shimla. Later in 1954, the so exhibits were shifted to Moti Bagh Palace situated in Patiala. However, in 1960 it was suggested that the museum should have its own building in Chandigarh. On being approved, the plan however got withheld in 1962 for some time and finally the Museum came into being on May 1968.The world famous Gandhara Sculptures are exhibited in the museum whose number is after to that of Lahore. The scholars and students may also fulfill their needs of knowledge through the well maintained library in Museum having a stock of 4600 books and references of arts and allied subjects.

Taxi : Chandigarh is well connected by a road network and National Highways 21 and National Highway 22. The tourist can reach to Chandigarh by taxi. The normal Indian taxi charges of Rupees 8 to 20 will be charged for each km.

Bus : State owned buses connect Chandigarh to all nearest cities in Punjab and Haryana. Deluxe Volvo buses and semi deluxe buses are available from Shimla (110 km), Manali (320 km), New Delhi (260 km) and Dehradun (175 km). Deluxe buses charge Rs 3-4 per kilometer.

Train : Chandigarh is connected by rail to many cities in Punjab, Haryana and also to Delhi. Frequent trains are running between Delhi and Chandigarh (260 km).
