Gopalpur, also known as Gopalpur-on-Sea, is a beach town in the Ganjam district in Orissa state in India. It is located in the region of Bay of Bengal in Indian Ocean. It is famed as a popular tourist destination in Orissa. An 18th century Krishna (Gopal) temple constructed in this fishing village was the origin of the name Gopalpur. Gopalpur is credited with a majestic past and the ruins of the ancient commercial port is the living symbol of its grandeur past. Gopalpur is a historically important town, sewn with the rule of British East India Company. This was an important trading centre during British Rule. The city was vibrant with many ware houses and business activities in the port. The port had become the centre for the sale of Rice from Rangoon, Burma.
