Attracting over 450,000 tourists every year, some of the popular Georgetown landmark tourist attractions include the St. George’s Anglican Cathedral, the Stabroek Market, the Demerara Harbor Bridge and the Pegasus Hotel. Situated at the mouth of the Demerara River along the Atlantic coast, Georgetown is nicknamed as the ‘Garden City of the Caribbean’. Apart from being the capital and the largest city in Guyana, Georgetown primarily serves as a financial, retail and administrative centre of the country. Originating as a small trading town for the Dutch in the 18th century, Georgetown features a tropical rainforest climate which rarely sees temperatures soaring above 31 degrees Celsius.
Served by the main Cheddi Jagan Temeri International Airport which is located 41 kilometers to the south of the city, Georgetown also offers daily ferry services to Paramaribo in Suriname. Regular coach services between Georgetown and Boa Vista in Brazil are also available for visitors who would also like to explore within the surrounding countries. Moreover, Ogle Domestic Airport located within Georgetown, is now being developed so as to effectively connect this capital city with the rest of the country.
