Gasa the northern most district of the country adjoins the districts of Punakha, Thimphu and Wangdue Phodrang and with Tibet to its north. This starkly beautiful region with elevations ranging from 1500 to 4,500 meters experiences extremely long and hard winters and short but beautiful summers. It has the smallest population with just about 3000 inhabitants. Of culture meet the people of Laya, the nomads of western Bhutan. These people live on yaks and harvest of Cordycep (fungi of high value, used in oriental medicine).
The Gasa Hot Spring Trek is one of the easier treks in Bhutan although it is advisable to connect the walking days and walk up to the tsachu from Tashitang road head in one day. Soon the road will reach Damji. Then the Gasa Hot Spring Trek will decrease to a three day trek. Although the altitude difference between starting and ending point is minimal, the many ups and downs on the way can make it more strenuous than it looks at first sight. However, the relaxation at the tsachu and the views and a visit of Gasa Dzong are absolutely rewarding. From April to September one will have lots of leeches enrooted. They love the warm and humid climate of Punakha valley, and they will love you!.
The best seasons for this trek are February to March & October to December. The duration of the trek is five days, with an elevation of 2,430 meters, where the highest camping site is at 2,250 meters. The treks level is easy and the best season for the Gasa Hot Spring Trek is from February to March & October to December. The trek starts from Tashitang (Punakha) and finishes at Tashitang (Punakha) in Bhutan.
