Detail InformationEdit
The Frisco Bridge, antecedently referred to as the Memphis Bridge, could be a cantilevered through span carrying a road across the Mississippi between West Memphis, Arkansas and Memphis, Tennessee. At the time of the Memphis bridge construction, it had been a major technological challenge and is taken into account to be chief engineer St. George S. Morison’s crowning action. No alternative bridges had ever been tried on the Lower Mississippi.
The bridge is made entirely of open-hearth steel, a freshly developed material at the time of construction. The structure options a 790 foot main span and 2 extra 600 foot spans. Its sixty five foot height on top of the water was the very best clearance of any U.S. Bridge of that era. The development of the piers went nearly one hundred feet below the water’s surface.
Though some sources claim 2 cantilevered roadways were supplemental to the bridge within the Thirties, one on either side, they in all probability confuse this bridge with the neighboring Harahan Bridge, that had 2 cantilevered roadways from 1917 till the Memphis & Arkansas Bridge opened in 1949. Today, the Harahan Bridge still has the metal remains of its cantilevered roadways; the Frisco Bridge doesn’t. However, pedestrians, buggies, and a few cars used the most deck of the Frisco Bridge before the Harahan Bridge opened (the bridge was closed to such traffic whereas a train was crossing).
Construction for the Kansas town, Fort Scott and Memphis Railroad began in 1888 and was completed could twelve, 1892. Within the finish the project created a bridge that was the farthest south on the Mississippi, featured the longest span within the us and price nearly three million greenbacks. A testament to its style and construction, as of 2009 the bridge remains utilized by BNSF Railway. The bridge is listed as a Historic engineering Landmark.
