Apart from being the administrative capital and the largest city of Sierra Leone, Freetown is also a major port city on the West African coastline of the Atlantic Ocean. Ethnically and culturally diverse, the population of Freetown is almost equally divided amongst Muslims and Christians. Located on a peninsula at the foot of mountains on the south bank of an estuary of the Sierra Leone River, Freetown is home to some of the finest beaches on the African continent.
Served by the Freetown International Airport located in Lungi on the other side of the estuary, there are a number of small boats, hovercrafts and helicopter services which transport passengers to/from Freetown. Featuring several tourist attractions including hotels, bars and restaurants, the unrelenting heat alone can make life uncomfortable in Freetown. Moreover, like in many parts of Africa petty theft is common in Freetown, so beware as this may spoil your excellent vacation.
