Grand Bahama is one in all the north of the islands of the state, and therefore the nearest major island to the us, lying ninety kilometres (56 mi) off the state of Sunshine State. Grand Bahama is that the fifth largest island within the state island chain of roughly 700 islands and a pair of,400 cays. The island is around one hundred fifty kilometres (93 mi) long west to east and twenty kilometres (12 mi) at its widest purpose north to south.
Administratively the island consists of the Freeport warranted space and therefore the districts of East Grand Bahama and West Grand Bahama
The Spanish gave the island the name grannie Bajamar, that means “Great Shallows”, and what the ultimate name of the state islands as an entire comes from. However, the Lucayan (pre-Columbian) name for the island was Bahama. Grand Bahama’s existence for pretty much 2 centuries was for the most part ruled by the character of those “great shallows” – the coral reefs encompassing the island were treacherous, and repelled its Spanish homeowners (who for the most part left it alone excluding sporadic en-route stops by ships for provisions) whereas attracting pirates, UN agency would lure ships onto the reefs wherever they’d run stranded and be ransacked. The Spaniards took very little interest within the island when enslaving the native Lucayan inhabitants.
The islands were claimed by nice United Kingdom in 1670. Piracy continued to thrive for a minimum of 0.5 a century when country takeover, tho’ the matter was eventually brought in restraint.
