Fortaleza San Luis or Museo Delaware la Fortaleza San Luis is found close to the Yaque Delawarel Norte stream in southwest Santiago de los Caballeros, state. The Fort was the placement of many battles throughout the War of Restoration. Fortaleza San Luis has conjointly served as a Municipal jail and additional recently the fort has been born-again into a deposit.
The fort, throughout its history has been important to the protection and management of the Dominican Republic’s second town, Santiago, and by extension the complete Cibao vale region. When Independence from Haiti and fearing a repeat invasion by Haiti, then president Pedro Santana requested the re-annexation of the state to Kingdom of Spain in March 1861. As such, Kingdom of Spain sent four infantries beneath the command of commissioned military officer Ramon Delaware Portal y Ciudad Trujillo to occupy the fort.
Santana’s call wasn’t common amongst a Nationalist movement and also the War of Restauration ensued. Dominican forces repealed the Spanish and by Sept 1863 the fort was recaptured by Dominican forces. When the restoration of the Republic, the fort was born-again into a military faculty, that in 1875, graduated its top quality of Cadets from Officers coaching within the Yaque Battalion.
