Fort Wood was a angular fortification on Liberty Island (now Liberty Island). Its walls were used because the distinctive base for the sculpture of Liberty given by France for the 1886 centenary celebrations. The fort was a noncurrent base on Liberty Island made between 1807 and 1811.Since 1823, it had seldom been used, although throughout the war, it had served as a recruiting station.
