Fort Whoop-Up was the nickname (that was eventually adopted because the official name) given to a whiskey country store, originally Fort Hamilton, close to what’s currently Lethbridge, Alberta. Throughout the late nineteenth century, the post served as a centre for varied black-market activities. The sale of whiskey was illegitimate however, attributable to the shortage of a law enforcement agency within the region at the time, several whiskey traders had settled within the space and brought to charging outstandingly high costs for his or her merchandise.
