Detail InformationEdit

To the west of the picturesque village of Marsaxlokk, the Knights built a massive fort of St Lucian (1610-1611) to protect the bay from Turkish attacks. It’s the second largest coastal tower of the island. In 1614 the guns of the tower engaged in their first action when they repulsed an invading fleet of sixty Turkish vessels from Marsaxlokk Bay. Being low-lying on the coast, the fort could not speedily send messages to the headquarters in Valletta.
Thus, on the hill behind, the Knights added transepts to the old church of St. Gregorio at Zejtun, inserting a corridor high up in the thickness of the walls from which a sentry could spy, through carefully aligned window openings, signals transmitted from the roofs of both towers at St. Lucian and St. Thomas, easily passing the messages on to Valletta whose ramparts were visible from the roof of the church. Used as a munitions depot during the World War II, it now houses the Marine Research Centre.
