Named for a well-liked Union general killed within the war, Fort Phil Kearny was established at the forks of the large and small Piney Creeks by notch. Henry B. Carrington of the eighteenth U.S. Foot in July, 1866. The Mission of this fort and 2 different posts on the Bozeman Trail–Forts Reno and C.F. Smith–was three- fold: to shield travelers on the Trail; to forestall social group warfare between Native yankees within the area; and to draw attention of Indian forces hostile Euro- American westward growth aloof from the trans-continental railroad construction passageway to the south.
Fort Phil Kearny State Historic web site is found simply twenty miles south of Sheridan on interstate ninety, Exit 44. At the Fort location the traveler can realize associate instructive center with exhibits, videos, bookstore, and self-guided tours of the fort and far sites.
