This park was the positioning of the many “firsts” in Montana history. It had been home to Montana’s 1st Christian church supported by Father DeSmet in 1841 and therefore the state’s 1st permanent white settlement. Additionally placed here were the primary sawmill, 1st cereal mill, 1st agricultual development, superiority right, and therefore the 1st college for settlers. Major John Owen arrived within the wildflower vale in 1850 and established the fort and commenced commerce with the Indians and growing variety of immigrants. Amount furnishings and artifacts ar displayed within the renovated rooms of the east barracks. Take some time to flick thru atiny low depository housed in preserved and partially-reconstructed structures. This website is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Interpretative signs and exhibits detail the site’s history.
