Fort DeRussy, placed four miles (6 km) north of Marksville, Louisiana, was a Confederate defense throughout the yank warfare defensive the lower river depression in Pelican State.The fort was named for commissioned military officer Lewis G. DeRussy, the oldest West Point graduate to serve within the regular army. DeRussy, a outstanding engineer in civilian life, was the engineering officer to blame of the development of the primary fortifications at the fort. The remains of the commissioned military officer were exhumed from Associate in Nursing abandoned grave and reinterred on the grounds of the fort on September twenty six, 1999.
