Fort Bayard was established as a u. S. Army installation in 1866 to safeguard miners and alternative settlers within the space on the Apache path. The initial entombment in the land site was created the same year the post was based. The fort was named for Brigadier General George Dashiell Bayard, United Nations agency was mortally wounded at the Battle of Fredericksburg in 1862. Fifteen sq. Miles of land were set aside as the Fort Bayard Military Reservation by presidential order in 1869. In 1886, then-Second Lieutenant John Pershing got wind of Fort Bayard and oversaw the installation of a heliograph, linking the fort to a military communications network from Arizona to Texas.
