Flanigan Ditch was made concerning 1880 by the Flanigan family, Mormon pioneers within the Zion natural depression. The Flanigans nonheritable water rights for a little of the flow of Blessed Virgin watercourse in 1880 to water the family’s lands on the watercourse. The family was distinguished, with the feature currently noted at “The Watchman” referred to as “Flanigan Peak”, whereas the placement of the current guard bivouac was referred to as Flanigan Field.
Over time, the farmlands on the lower portion of the ditch were abandoned below the current outlet at the guard bivouac. The buried portion of the ditch is considered a possible archeologic feature concerning the amount of pioneer settlement. The lands encompassing the ditch were nonheritable by the Park Service from the Flanigans in 1960. Of the initial fifteen,000 feet (4,600 m) of ditch, about 12,000 feet (3,700 m) square measure inside the park, with the higher third mostly intact however unwatered for a part of its length.
A portion continues to hold water for irrigation of the guard bivouac. Growth of the park boundaries has enclosed a buried and abandoned portion of the lower ditch. The ditch shares its headworks with the Springdale Consolidated Irrigation Company’s pipeline, that provides municipal water to the city through a pipeline put in in 1988.
