Empress Garden is situated near the Pune Solapur Road. The garden was originally under the ownership of Sardar Vithalrao Purandhare and was managed by General Finjer. It came under the management of the British government in the year 1838. The occupation of the Empress Garden transferred in 1845 and it came under Sir Charles Napier. During that time, the garden came to be known as ‘Garden of Dr. Don’. Given below is more information on the Empress Garden of Poona, India. Empress Garden of Pune acquired its present name when queen Victoria embraced the title of ‘Empress Of India’. However, since the garden was frequently used by the British soldiers as a recreational spot, it popularly came to be known as the ‘Soldier’s Garden’. In 1892, Empress Garden came under the control of the Bombay Government, who later transferred it to Agri-Horicultural society of western India. Spread over an area of around 59 acres, the garden is full of mangoes and tamarind trees as well as beautiful flowers.

Empress Garden came under the management of the British government in the year 1838. The ownership of the garden passed into the hands of the Government. In 1845, it further changed hands and came into the possession of Sir Charles Napier. Throughout his ownership, the garden was known as the ‘Garden of Dr. Don’. The name ‘Empress Garden’ was given to the botanical park in honor of Queen Victoria, when she won the title of ‘Empress of India’. During the British Era, the garden was a favorite amongst British soldiers. They came here for recreation purpose and with time, the garden got the name of ‘Soldiers’ Garden’. It was in the year 1892 that Empress Garden came under the possession and ownership of the Bombay Government. The Government then passed it on to the Agri-Horicultural society of Western India. Today, the garden is frequented by locals as well as tourists in large numbers. It provides them the much-needed peace and serenity that seems to have become lost in the mundane routine of city life.

Air : Pune airport is located about 10 km away from the heart of the city, in the Lohagaon area. Taxi charge from airport to city is only Rs 200. Others : Auto-rickshaws : There is also a huge army of three wheeled rickshaws. There are some prepaid rickshaw stands at Shivajinagar, Swargate Bus Depot and Lohegaon Airport. From here autorickshaw is easily available to reach these sight.

Safety / WarningEdit
- While traveling from Pune to Mumbai beware of touts who induce you into cheaper travel. Rather take the Asiad buses from the regular stand at the Pune station or the crowded luxury buses which are safer options.
- The auto rickshaw drivers can overcharge so ask them for meter readings and follow the rules of the meter while making payments. The city is heavily polluted in crowded junctions so avoid traveling in rush hours.
- Do not trust strangers while traveling and avoid traveling out late at night in lonely areas, though Pune is relatively a safe city, and the crime rate is low.
