Founded in 1905, Empalme could be a town encircled by a municipality placed on the south-central coast of the Mexican state of Sonora. In step with the 2005 census the population of town was forty,630 inhabitants, whereas the municipality, that has a part of 708.53 km² (273.56 sq mi), rumored fifty,663 inhabitants. Aside from its outline on the Gulf of California (Sea of Cortes), the municipality is entirely encircled by the abundant larger municipality of Guaymas.
