The town is called for Powhatan Ellis, a former U.S. Legislator for Mississippi and descendant of Chief Powhatan, father of Rebecca Rolfe. Ellisville was the key business and population center of Jones County till being supplanted by close Laurel within the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
