Detail InformationEdit
Eighth Avenue Place is a twin office tower project under construction on the former site of Calgary’s historic Penny Lane Mall. The project initially kept the Penny Lane name, however it has since been renamed. Concerns have been raised over the destruction of the 94-year-old Penny Lane Mall, however the City of Calgary approved the project in March 2006. Demolition of the old mall was completed in September 2007. Excavation of the parkade below the building commenced in December 2007 and construction of the 49 story east tower, and the parkade begun in Summer 2008. Eighth Avenue Place East was completed in 2011 and is currently the third tallest building in Calgary.
The project contains a 41 story west tower (177.1m) and a 49 story east tower (212.3m). A three storey high indoor urban park will be developed on the second floor. The structures, designed by Gibbs Gage Architects, will have a Rocky Mountain theme, with a western facing pale-green glass wall mimicking mountain waters and glaciers. The rest of the building will adopt a dark gray layered appearance representing the shifting tectonic plates that built the mountains. The buildings will retain the Plus 15 skywalk connections, and contains a six-level underground parkade with 1141 parking stalls, many of which are currently short term stalls and will be until the West Tower is complete.
