The jap Settlement was the primary and largest of the 3 areas of Norse Kalaallit Nunaat, settled c. AD 985 by Norsemen from Iceland. At its peak, it contained roughly four,000 inhabitants. The last written account from the jap Settlement is of a marriage solemnized in 1408, inserting it concerning 50–100 years later than the top of the additional northern Western Settlement. Roughly five hundred teams of ruins of Norse farms ar found within the space, as well as sixteen church ruins.
Despite its name, the jap Settlement was additional south than east of its companion and, just like the Western Settlement, was settled on the southwestern tip of Kalaallit Nunaat at the pinnacle of long fjords: Tunulliarfik fiord, Igaliku or Sermilik fiord.
