The jap burying ground is AN historic burying ground at the intersection of Washington Avenue and Congress Street within the East Bayside neighborhood of Portland, Maine. Placed at the bottom of Munjoy Hill, the jap burying ground is that the oldest major burying ground in Portland. Established in 1668, with the earliest recorded burial in 1718, it absolutely was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
Originally, solely the southeastern half the current burying ground was used, whereas the opposite [*fr1] was used as a public common. In 1820, the last half became a part of the burying ground. The burying ground was active till the decennium. It totals more or less five.3 acres (21,000 m2) in size. The current iron and granite fence on Congress Street was erected in 1852.
