Detail InformationEdit

During the third quarter of the 13th century the Riga Dome Cathedral Chapter built the castle for its practical purposes. During later centuries, the castle served both as a stronghold and as living quarters for its owners. The last private owners of the castle, the family of Osten-Saken, managed the castle from 1711 until the agrarian reforms of 1920.
Dundaga Castle is the largest 13th century castle in North Kurzeme, with an inner yard, a gate tower, and walls, 2-3 metres thick. Adjoining the castle there is a 21.7-hectare park with trees representing 48 species and five listed trees. From 1945 to 1974 the castle was home to the Dundaga Secondary School.
In 1872 and 1905 the castle experienced major fires and was renovated both times. Since the last renovations between 1909 and 1914, the second floor of the castle still retains part of the period interior. On the left from the door there stands a sandstone stela by the castle’s architect, Grinigen, and on the right – a stela depicting Bishop Berthold.
The tower over the entrance to the north-western section of the castle is decorated by the Coats-of-Arms of the three last owners from the Osten-Saken family. As legend has it, when a gnome king was celebrating his wedding at Dundaga Castle, the baron’s sister unintentionally interrupted the festivity, and for this she was walled in … alive. She is the so-called Green Maiden – Jumprava whose ghost still haunts the castle.
