At a distance of 60 km from Kargil in Jammu & Kashmir is the town of Dras, also referred to as ‘The Gateway to Ladakh’. Labelled as the coldest place in the subcontinent and second to Siberia in the severity of its winter, the town is a popular tourist destination due to its strategic location. It serves as a gateway to other cities, towns and hill stations in the state too. Mainly popular for its rugged landscape, the place is a perfect location for adventure buffs as they can try out trekking through the mountains. The Suru Valley, located close to the Dras town is a main destination for trekkers, who traverse along the sub range in order to reach this valley. One can also take a trek to the holy region of Amarnath, which lies near Dras. It is a three days trek and one has to cover a high pass that is located at an altitude of 5200 m. Dras enjoys a temperate climate and the main seasons are those of summer and winter, as the town does not experience much rain. Summers (April to June) are pleasant and ideal for tourist purposes. The temperature ranges up to a maximum of 24°C and a minimum of 9°C during this period. Winters (October to February) are extremely cold making it impossible for travelling.

HistoryEdit
Drass is a great city to visit in the state of Jammu & Kashmir.Drass is around 60 Kms. to the west of Kargil on the road to Srinagar. The place has beautiful pasture grounds and majestic mountain peaks surrounding it. Drass is the second coldest inhabited place in the world, where the temperature goes as low as – 50 in winter. Drass has become famous in recent years because of Pakistan’s misadventure in the Tiger hill and Tolloling areas. One can have a lovely view of Tiger hill from Drass village. The inhabitants in Drass consist mainly of the Dards stock, an Aryan race believed to have originally migrated to these villages of the western Himalaya from Central Asian steppes. The language they speak is Shina, which is very much unlike the Ladakhi dialects spoken elsewhere in the Ladakh region. Polo is the favorite time pass of the inhabitants of Drass.
