Dongfang is one of the 7 county-level cities of Hainan Province, People’s Republic of China. It is located on the western coast of Hainan Island facing Vietnam across the Gulf of Tonkin, and in 2004 had a population of 435,000.
Dongfang has a tropical wet and dry climate (Köppen Aw).Monsoonal influences are strong, and the two seasons are the wet season and the dry season (November to April), where little rainfall occurs (January to March). Rainfall is heaviest and most frequent from August to October, when typhoons may strike, and averages an annual total of 960 millimetres (38 in), lower than many locations on the island. The city receives ample sunshine, amounting to 2560 hours annually.
