Detail InformationEdit

Excavation has revealed that this site has once been home to a mighty fortification that spread over 2,000 sq mtrs. Unfortunately, nothing is known about the proprietor and the name of the Castle.
There are ancient remains of defensive earthworks, but very little is known about them. There are no remnants of a bailey nor walls, but, instead, a remarkable 30 meters deep fountain and a moat. They both show a striking size considering their age.
In an old collection of legends and myths of Steyr, there are detailed descriptions of “Robber Baron Castles” at Waldneukirchen and near Pillwein.
The name of the fortification derives from an old legend, that has it that the Devil himself laid the foundation of the Castle.
The Castle probably was destroyed in a great fire by the end of the 14th century. This is proven by the fact that “double” fired potsherds were found within excavations of the site.
