Detail InformationEdit

Matthias Wieshofer was priest and dean of St. Johann in Tirol from 1784 to 1819. When the Tiroleans were fighting for freedom against the Franco-Bavarian occupying powers in1809, Wieshofer saved St. Johann from destruction by facing the enemies by himself. The enemy soldiers wanted to shoot him immediately. When Wieshofer asked the French general Lefèbre in perfect French to spare him and his town the general complied with the the wish as he was very much impressed with the priest´s courage.
There is a statue in front of the church in memoriam of dean Wieshofer.
Next to the statue there are two commemorative plaques reminding of the two freedom fighters Christian Blattl and Thomas Reischer.
