Detail InformationEdit
An interesting visit to a museum can be united with a picnic on Dole Island by visiting the Daugava Museum, at the gateway to the Riga HPP. The museum has a rich collection of archaeological materials that tell about events on the Daugava River banks, starting with the first settlers who came to the territory of Latvia.
In December 2006, the number of exhibits in the museum’s collection exceeded 49 000 (of these, 33 150 units are in the permanent collection).
The most valuable exhibits are the collection of fishing tools (there is a unique salmon and lamprey weir structure), photos about the Daugava useful arts, postcards and ethnographic items that bear evidence of the lifestyle of residents on the Daugava River banks.
The archaeological exposition provides unique materials about the ancient history of Latvia, starting with the first Stone Age man’s place of residence – the Salaspils Laukskola settlement (9th century BC) and up to the Ikšķile Castle and church complex – the first stone construction in the Baltic area (1198).
