One must see destination in the town of Darasuram is the Airavateshwara temple, which is located in the middle of the town. This is an age old temple that is an architectural marvel. It was built by the kind Rajaraja the IInd, way back during the time of the Chola Empire. Similar to the other Chola monuments in the state, the temple of Airavateshwara has splendid architecture and is beautifully constructed. The main deity in this temple is Lord Shiva, who is known as Airavateshwara in this region. This is because legend has it that the mystical white elephant Airavat paid its respects to the deity at this place. There are many sculptures of historical interest that line the walls of this temple, and these sculptures depict the Chola reign and other principal Hindu deities. The climate in Darasuram is sub tropical, and the climate is generally hot, similar to the other cities and towns in the delta of the Cauvery River. The main seasons in the town of Darasuram are the seasons of summer, winter and monsoon. The months of April, May, June and July are the summer months in Darasuram.

Darasuram or Dharasuram is a panchayat town located 3 kilometres from Kumbakonam in Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu, India. The temple at Darasuram, 4 km west of Kumbakonam is Airvatesvara (Airavat is the holy white elephant) Temple.This temple is one of the finest examples of Dravidian. The gopuram of this temple is 85feet high and has excusite architecture, sculptures and paintings.Darasuram, Airavateeshwarar temple is a replica of Tanjore Big temple but smaller in size. Darasuram temple was constructed by Rajaraja Chola II in the 12th century. This temple is a store house of art work. One can see magnificent work of art and the finely chiseled work on each and every stone, carved to perfection. Even the steps leading to the temple has a story to tell. The ceiling of the temple has exquisite carvings. Minute work on the pillars fills the mind with awe and fascination. The main mandapam of this temple is in the form of a chariot drawn by horses. This temple is a protected under UNESCO World Heritage monuments.

By Train : The town of Darasuram also has a railway station. This station is not a very major station, and is a minor one where trains that ply from Kumbakonam and Thanjavur stop regularly. There are also regular trains to Bangalore, Chennai, Trichy, Madurai, and Tirunelveli from Kumbakonam and Thanjavur that pass through the town of Darasuram, so traveling to Darasuram via trains should not be an issue. Train fares will range from around 150 RS to 500 RS, depending on the class of travel.

By BUS : Buses to Darasuram ply from the town of Kumbakonam quite regularly. There are many semi deluxe buses that run to Darasuram, and you can opt for any one of these as ticket fares will be cheap, lesser than around 25 RS. You can also opt for buses from other major cities in Tamil Nadu, like Salem, Thanjavur, Chidambaram, Pondicherry, Cuddalore, Madurai and Dindigul. Bus fares may vary depending on the distance covered and can move up till 200-300 RS for deluxe buses.
