With an extremely friendly and helpful local population, Dakar, located on the Cap-Vert Peninsula on the Atlantic coast is the westernmost city of the African continent mainland. Serving as the capital city of the Republic of Senegal, Dakar is the main administrative centre since independence in 1960. Featuring a hot semi-arid climate with a short rainy season, Dakar is very well connected with Europe, North America and several other African cities through regular scheduled flight services.
Major tourist attractions in Dakar are the traditional markets, Grand Mosque, the Dakar Cathedral, the African Renaissance Monument and the IFAN Museum of West African Culture. Other natural touristic activities around this city include beach and cliff walks, trips to Hann Park and Goree Island, and a visit to the Senegal Zoo. A major terminal on the Dakar-Niger railroad line, Dakar also serves as an important port of Senegal.
