Detail InformationEdit

The reflection of two castles can be seen in the waters of Lake Czorsztyński. The castles were erected above the Dunajec valley on the Polish-Hungarian border to guard the trade route from Hungary. The Czorsztyn settlement goes back to the 13th century. The stone castle was erected by King Kazimierz Wielki (Casimir the Great) some time during the 14th century. Here in the castle, in the year 1384 the future Queen Jadwiga (Hedwig) was welcomed. The castle was abandoned in the 18th century and fell into ruin. Today the picturesque ruin mysteriously spreads its rather gloomy charm over the valley. The second Dunajec castle, located in nearby Niedzica was a residence of powerful Hungarian lords from the 14th century. Later it underwent alterations and become a renaissance residence which was still inhabited in 1943. It is extremely well preserved. Today it houses within its walls a museum and holiday apartments. It has its own legend which fires the imagination of visitors – a treasure of the Incas is said to be hidden in the castle.
