Custer Observatory is associate degree astronomical observatory owned and operated by full general|General Custer|general|full general} Institute. Set in Southold, ny (USA), facing Peconic Bay and Shelter Island, Custer’s location boasts a number of the darkest skies on island.Long Island’s oldest public observatory, Custer Institute was supported in 1927 by Charles Wesley Elmer (co-founder of the Perkin-Elmer Optical Company), beside a gaggle of fellow amateur-astronomers.
The name was adopted to honor the cordial reception of Mrs. Elmer, the Grand kinswoman of General Saint George Armstrong Custer. In 1942, the Custer Institute was incorporated as a non-profit academic corporation within the State of recent York.In 1938, the cluster purchased the land the institute presently occupies and initial construction was completed within the spring of 1939.
