Cozad-Bates House, is that the oldest and solely living pre-Civil War structure in University Circle, Cleveland, Ohio, placed at the Mayfield Road and East one hundred and fifteenth Street intersection. It’s traditionally better-known for its involvement within the flight. Emancipationist Apostle Cozad engineered the house in 1853 for his son Justus L. Cozad, United Nations agency in 1872 further a Italianate front to the structure. Architecturally, it’s a rare living example of Italianate-influenced residential design in America at that point, which has a hipped roof, curved bay windows, paired eave brackets, and distinguished belvedere.
The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 and selected as a Cleveland Landmark in 2006. When the gap of the Ohio and Erie Canal within the 1830’s, Cleveland became a destination for fugitive slaves and therefore the bondsmen United Nations agency half-track them. Before the warfare, slaves touched through Ohio’s flight network that extended 200 and fifty miles from Ripley,OH to Cleveland.
Known by the key code name “Hope,” Cleveland became a destination for freedom seekers creating their manner north to North American country. Persons seeking freedom were usually assisted by abolitionists in University Circle, erst a district of East Cleveland territorial division. The Cozad family closely-held an oversized portion of the land that is currently occupied by University Circle.
