The city of Cordoba is the second largest city in Argentina. Its impressive historical and archeological heritage won Cordoba the title of “Cultural Capital of the Americas” in 2006.
The city was established in 1573 due to its strategic location on the Camino Real – the “Royal Road” that joined Lima and the Potosí silver mines with Buenos Aires. Majestic colonial buildings and a notable lack of sky scrapers reflect this legacy.
Córdoba is known colloquially as “La Docta” (the Learned) after its prestigious university – the first to be founded in Argentina- and “The City of Bells” because of the large quantity of churches in the city centre. Don’t miss the UNESCO protected Manzana Jesuítica (Jesuit Square); the Eva Duarte museum; the Cathedral and Capuchin churches; Sarmiento Park and the hills that surround the city.
