One of the major commercial hubs along the Black Sea coast, Constanta traces a history going back to 2,500 years. Founded by the Greek colonists in the 6th century, Constanta is a tourist haven and the second most important city in Romania. Presently home to over 400,000 inhabitants, this port-town of Constanta was originally known as Tomis and was extensively trading with the Byzantine Empire. Featuring a moderate continental climate showing considerable maritime and sub-tropical influences, winter season in Constanta is much balmier than other inland southern Romanian cities.
Tourism has of now become an important economic activity of Constanta since it is strategically situated at the crossroads of several commercial routes. Displaying a whole lot of touristic treasure including ancient ruins, historic monuments, museums, shops, a grand casino and close proximity to numerous beach resorts, Constanta is at the focal point of Black Sea coast tourism. Blessed with an international airport and the largest commercial sea-port on the Black Sea, Constanta is well connected through bus and train services with most other destinations in Romania.
