Congregation Shaare Zedek (Gates of righteousness) may be a Conservative tabernacle set on West 93rd Street in Manhattan. Supported in 1837, by Polish Jews, Shaare Zedek is that the third oldest human congregation in the big apple town. The congregation originally met at thirty eight Henry Street on Manhattan’s Lower side. In 1850, it purchased a building at thirty eight Henry Street (still on the Lower East Side) that was originally designed by a Quaker congregation in 1828 that had been born-again to be used as a tabernacle by congregation Ansche Chesed in 1840.
The congregation replaced this building with a brand new building on an equivalent property in 1891 and in 1900 opened a branch tabernacle at twenty five West 118th Street within the recently modern neighborhood of city district. The building is currently a church. The Henry Street building was sold to Congregation Mishkan Israel Anshei Suwalk in 1911. Shaare Zedek’s gift, elaborate, neoclassic building was designed by the design firm of Sommerfeld and Steckler and in-built 1922-1923. Over the years, Shaare Zedek has been home to a number of the country’s nice rabbis together with Prince Philip R. Alstat, Israel Goldfarb, and Isaac Kurtzlow at the side of such reputable cantors as Frank Birnbaum and Martin Kozlowsky.
Since 2009, the congregation has been diode by Rabbi William Plevan. Though Shaare Zedek was the last Conservative tabernacle within the space to permit totally egalitarian worship, girls currently participate in each facet of the service and therefore the congregation was recently served by a feminine rabbi. Whereas protective the standard liturgy quite closely and committing to a reasonably strict observance of human law, the community is usually politically and socially progressive.
