Congregation Sha’arai Shomayim is that the oldest Judaic congregation within the state of Alabama and one among the oldest Reform Judaic congregations within the u. S.. Placed in Mobile, the congregation was formally organized in 1844. The present temple for the congregation is that the Springhill Avenue Temple.The first outstanding Judaic voters of Mobile were St. George Davis, associate English person from Tuscaloosa, Alabama; Dr. King Mordecai from North Carolina; and prince Phillips, associate professional person from Charleston, South geographic region. Phillips was later electoral to the Alabama State general assembly so to the u. S. Congress. By the time of Phillips election to Congress in 1853, over fifty Judaic families were living in Mobile. Though no records survive that document the religious activities of Mobile’s earliest Judaic voters, on June 22, 1841 Congregation Sha’arai Shomayim purchased plots within the city’s Magnolia burial ground.
