The Kouros of Apollonas , including Colossus of Dionysus mentioned, a 10.70 meter large unfinished statue, made of gray marble, Naxos , weighing around 80 tons.
It is located in an old quarry near Apollonas , a small town in the north of Naxos , one of The Greek Islands of the Cyclades in the Aegean Sea . The statue of the archaic period of ancient Greece is the type of Kouros from the turn of the 6/7 Century BC.
The figure is exposed block, the body of the head with a beard and the ears are visible in their outward form, the approach of hair. The arms have the masons carved a rudimentary rectangular and the formation of feet has been started in their outer form, they are on a 50 cm high plinth .
The rock layer in which the unfinished Kouros is showing bearings in stone, along the lead throughout the body. To what extent the formation of cracks already existed in pre-Christian times, can not be traced. In an illustration of the signatory Schaubert in an engraving from 1835 cracks are visible.
The Kouros of Apollonas is located in an ancient marble quarry , one of the oldest quarries is Greece. He is close to Apollonas on a dirt road through the village. It is a typical surface quarry, where in that time from the rock or soil layers outstanding body of rock were mined near the surface.
